Fireworks Are Scary
Take a moment to consider changing how you celebrate. It’s never too late 🙂.
Fireworks are a spectacle for humans but a danger for wildlife. The disturbance causes abandonment and nest mortality. With the explosive sounds, flashing lights, and smoke, bird parents who are just trying to protect their young can get spooked and fly away or into buildings. Disoriented offspring fall out of nests, injuring themselves and being left helpless to starvation.
It’s not just birds. The same is true for squirrels, rabbits, deer, etc. Most wild parents are raising their young right now, and, without fail, each year July 5th is the worst day on record for displaced wildlife for Carolina Waterfowl Rescue and all wildlife rehabilitators.
We ask you to use sparklers instead of fireworks today, and you’ll be saving lives! Just because you can’t see them hiding out under your porch, in your bushes, or in the trees behind your house, doesn’t mean these animals aren’t all around us. Be sure to collect all trash created from celebrations, as well.
You can also volunteer with Carolina Waterfowl Rescue or your local wildlife rescue to help protect the birds. Email volunteer@cwrescue.org to get started.
