Track A Patient
Keep up with an animal patient by following their rehabilitation journey.
When an animal arrives at Carolina Waterfowl Rescue, we begin by conducting an initial assessment to examine and stabilize the patient. During the physical exam, we look for indicators of illness or injury, such as swelling, soft tissue wounds, fractures, lameness, and signs of pain. Additionally, we perform diagnostic tests, including radiographs, to better understand the condition. Based on our findings, we develop a treatment plan to guide the recovery process.
Now, with the addition of the RaptorMed patient management software, you can follow the journey of an animal after their admission to our rescue center.
Notable Cases
Follow A Patient
Check up on your favorite animal patient. View details like their treatments, weight checks, and photo updates as we add these notes into our patient management software. Be a part of an animal’s recovery all the way from intake up until release or adoption!
Support A Patient
Our work survives on donations. Each patient we take in stays for as long as they need to recover, but their entire treatment cost is covered by public donations. You can donate directly to an animal’s rehabilitation using the transparent cost breakdown present on each patient’s RaptorMed chart.
Volunteer as a first responder
Transport more patients in-need of medical care to our rescue center! Join our transporter network as a first responder. Be patched in to rescue requests according to your geographic radius. Go out individually or in teams and join a community committed to saving lives.

We greatly appreciate your interest in transporting injured animals for CWR. As a volunteer transporter, you are an animal ambulance and first responder, many times arriving on scene when you are closest to a case and can be of the quickest assistance.
To get started with transport volunteering, please follow the steps below:
Register online as a CWR volunteer here https://cwrescue.org/volunteer
Complete this questionnaire so we can add you to our transporter map when tagging volunteers with rescues in your area. CWR Capture and Transport Volunteer Database - Google Forms
We organize all of our transports via a Facebook group. If you have a Facebook account, please request to join https://www.facebook.com/groups/CWRTransports/.
There is a pre-recorded orientation video that you will find in the transporters Facebook group within the “Featured” section. It is also linked below. Please give it a watch before you start helping out with transports and feel free to ask questions! We do not train in basic first aid.

As soon as you join the group and have watched the Transport Orientation, you may begin transporting. Our rescue center is located at 5403 Poplin Rd. Indian Trail, NC 28079. Transport drop-offs can be 8 am-6 pm 7 days a week. It helps us out if you text our hotline (704) 286-6330 with your ETA, so that we can best prepare for an animal’s arrival, especially if the animal is in critical condition. The faster that these animals can be picked up and brought to us, the faster their healing journey can begin.
It takes a network of committed transporters all over the state to save the lives of 7,000 animals annually. Thank you. Happy transporting!
Work up close with native wildlife offspring. During the spring and summer months, CWR receives several thousand young songbirds across 40 or more species that require care from sunup to sundown. We rely on volunteers to help these babies return to the wild.
Volunteer in our baby songbird nursery
-
Thank you for your interest in Carolina Waterfowl Rescue’s (CWR’s) Songbird Nursery volunteer program. This is a seasonal volunteer opportunity that begins in April and concludes in September. It requires a weekly commitment of at least one 3-hour shift, but of course you are welcome to volunteer more than that. You must be at least 16 years old to participate.
STEP 1:
If you haven’t already, please make sure you have registered as a CWR volunteer on our website at www.cwrescue.org/volunteer.
STEP 2:
Please watch these pre-orientation videos in full to get a sense of the expectations for baby songbird volunteering at CWR.
STEP 3:
Once you have watched our pre-orientation videos, please email CWR Songbird Nursery Manager Laurel Millaci at LMILLACI@CWRESCUE.ORG to schedule an on-site orientation session! Orientation is mandatory in order to begin volunteering.
STEP 4:
Please print and sign the following FOUR attached documents and bring them with you to your scheduled orientation. If you are a minor (16 to 17 yrs.), you and a parent or guardian must sign these forms and both of you must attend orientation.
Full Release Waiver and Indemnification (two pages)
Confidentiality Agreement
Receipt and Acknowledgment of the CWR Manual.
You are required to read the manual prior to signing this document, however, do not bring the manual with you. We recommend reading it on your computer rather than printing because it is a long document.
Rabies Vector Species Form
Each person must complete all of these steps in order to come. If you have a family member that wants to come with you, please make sure that they register, watch the required videos, complete our volunteer paperwork, and attend an orientation.
When reporting for your shift please go to our adjoining property next door at 5415 Poplin Rd. Indian Trail, NC. There is plenty of parking available over there.
Thank you for your interest in helping with the babies!
